Papain is a natural enzyme, a kind of endopeptidase containing hydrosulfide group(-SH), extracted from the milky juice of the unripe papaya by biotechnology. It can incorporate any of a wide variety of enzymes and increase the rate of biological changes such as the ripening of fruit. At the end of enzyme catalyzed reaction the enzyme itself is unchanged and is able to react again. it can help to stimulate protein synthesis and repair. 1. Papain has strong ability of hydrolyzing protein and can be used for improving the nutritional value or function of the plants and the animals protein. 2. Papain can also be found as an ingredient in some toothpastes or mints as teeth-whitener. Its whitening effect in toothpastes and mints however is minimal, because the papain is present in low concentrations, and will be quickly diluted by saliva.
